PART I: FISHERIES TRENDS The Global Fisheries Crisis as a Rationale for Improving the FAO’s Database of Fisheries Statistics1

چکیده
Global fisheries are in a crisis, and so are the marine ecosystems upon which these fisheries depend. Major policy and management changes are required to halt and reverse the trends that have brought about this situation. Underlying these changes is the need for availability of data sets, pertaining to large areas, that unequivocally demonstrate any large-scale fisheries impacts on marine ecosystems. Not until recently have such secondary data begun to be assembled, although data sets have been available for some time upon which such demonstrations could be based. This applies particularly to the global fisheries statistics assembled and maintained by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), which are assembled by large, arbitrary statistical areas (rather than by ecosystems), and which are not verified against local data sets. The present contribution documents a multi-pronged approach to develop and test a methodology for reconstructing historic catch time series (including misreported catches), and spatially assign these to ecosystems on a large spatial scale. This will serve as baselines for assessing the ‘health’ of ecosystems, and to evaluate the effects of fishing and management scenarios. Important components of this methodology are a global 1 An earlier version of this paper was presented at the Fisheries Project Planning Meeting of the Bejier International Institute of Ecological Economics, June 21-23, 1999 in Woods Hole, Mass. spatial catch allocation and mapping routine (www.seaaroundus.org), the Ecopath with Ecosim approach and software for constructing food web models of marine ecosystems (www.ecopath.org), and FishBase, an information system on the fish of the world (www.fishbase.org). Along with putting global fisheries data on a spatial ecosystem basis, these tools can greatly contribute to deepening our understanding of the ecosystem services upon which fisheries rely.

Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing global food animal production industries and, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), now accounts for nearly half of global food fish supply. This proportion is anticipated to grow in the coming decades as global capture fisheries continue to stagnate and global demand for seafood continues to rise. As the significance ...
متن کاملWho’s Eating All the Fish? The Food Security Rationale for Culling Cetaceans
In response to the global fisheries crisis, characterized by falling abundances of resource species, falling catches, increasing habitat destruction, and extremely high subsidies, the advocates of whaling have been advancing a new rationale for hunting of marine cetaceans. They claim that marine mammals, particularly the great whales, compete with humans for fish resources; that efforts to prot...
متن کاملPrediction of global sea cucumber capture production based on the exponential smoothing and ARIMA models
Sea cucumber catch has followed “boom-and-bust” patterns over the period of 60 years from 1950-2010, and sea cucumber fisheries have had important ecological, economic and societal roles. However, sea cucumber fisheries have not been explored systematically, especially in terms of catch change trends. Sea cucumbers are relatively sedentary species. An attempt was made to explore whe...
متن کاملRapid Global Expansion of Invertebrate Fisheries: Trends, Drivers, and Ecosystem Effects
BACKGROUND Worldwide, finfish fisheries are receiving increasing assessment and regulation, slowly leading to more sustainable exploitation and rebuilding. In their wake, invertebrate fisheries are rapidly expanding with little scientific scrutiny despite increasing socio-economic importance. METHODS AND FINDINGS We provide the first global evaluation of the trends, drivers, and population an...

The percentages of different food types in marine mammal consumption were computed based on diet composition standardised across species 96. Corresponding pe...
